Lal Bahadur Shastri : Jai Jawan Jai Kisan
Lal Bahadur Shastri may have been small in size but he had an immense vision. Determined to build a new India, he took on every challenge with a cheerful smile and a humble heart. Years of hard work took their toll, however. In her moment of triumph, the country was suddenly left grieving for a wise, honest and courageous prime minister.
Amar Chitra Katha published a graphic biography of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1980-81. For quite some time my friends and some members of my family have been wanting me to bring out a new Edition of Amar Chitra Katha on the life and times of India's second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. I took upon myself with the help of Dr. G.L. Sharma and Dr. Sheetal Singh to complete this project. Amar Chitra Katha in collaboration with Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi, decided to publish a New Edition of the biopic. Dr. Praveen Gupta, Director of Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management extended all cooperation in the publication of the second version of Amar Chitra Katha on Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Lal Bahadur Shastri was a man of impeccable values and principles. He stood by them firmly right through his life. Even in testing times, he did not flinch or compromise. Whether it was living within meagre means, not expecting, or giving preferential treatment, being fair to everyone and fulfilling his duties as a family man and father, he was an exemplary beacon.
Keeping this in mind, I thought that school-going children must be made aware of Shastriji's virtues because it is universally felt that his value systems, hard work, determination, commitment, and courage are as relevant today as they were in his lifetime. His slogan 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' still resonates across the length and breadth of our nation. I am sure that children of our time will find the new version of Amar Chitra Katha - Lal Bahadur Shastri interesting and informative and would get an insight into the life and times of one of the greatest sons of India.
Before sending it to the Publishers, I made Shastri Ji's great grandchildren, Abhiveer, aged 17, and Manya, aged 9 to read the Illustrated story book. They gave their valuable inputs from a young reader's perspective which have been incorporated in the story by the publishers
