THE PAUPER PRINCE

THE STORY OF MADANKAMARAJA is a popular tale of ancient Tamilnadu. Of late, it has been rewritten as well as translated for the reading pleasure of millions. Like the famous 'Arabian Nights', the tale consists of several stories. How these stories came to be related is a story in itself. Prince Madanakaraja's bosom friend was Chaturya. The prince fell in love with a girl of his own imagination. The two friends go in search of this imaginary beauty. At the sight of a sculpted figure, the prince, overcome with emotion, fainted. When he regained consciousness, he had lost his sanity. Chaturya then set out alone to find the girl of his friend's dreams, so that his happiness and mental health could be restored. Chaturya's keen intelligence soon enabled him to trace the two girls represented in the sculpture of the temple. He spent a few days in their company and told them many fascinating stories. Having thus gained their confidence, he revealed to them the real purpose of his visit. He then took them to meet Madanakamaraja. Seeing the girl of his dreams, the prince was overjoyed and became normal.
'THE PAUPER PRINCE' is one of the several stories told by Chaturya to the two princesses. This story is a mixture of reality and fantasy and is an all-time favourite.
