In oden days, the chief pleasure of the peasants who could neither read nor write was the folk tale. The tales first came from the lips of the "story tellers" of the good old days later to be put down in writing. Thus, our access these tales. These popular story-tellers travelled far and wide, some- times even to neighbouring countries. They collected a wide variety of fascinating tales about man as well as animal. Animal stories appeal especially to children. Animals be- having intelligently tickle children's sense of humour. There is invariably an animal clever enough to find a way out of any trouble. That gives a satisfying end to the tale. In the following pages are related three such animal srories, thoughtfully selected from folklore. They have everlasting appeal.
