SUDARSHAN THE WARRIOR
This story is one of the most captivating tales recorded in the 'KATHA-SARITSAGARA'. Several hundred years ago, its author, Acharya Gunadhya, worked as pundit in the darbar of the Satvahana King of Pratisthanpur in Andhra Pradesh. The Acharya travelled on foot from Kanniya Kumari to the Himalayas and in course of his travels collected a rich treasure of folktales of various regions. He authored the world's first ever collection of Stones 'VRIHAT-KATHA". Unfortunately, only one fourth of this historic collection is Extant. SOMDEV translated them into Sanskrit which came to be known as KATHA-SARITSAGARA. The stories in this collection portray a vivid mixture of several Indian folk tales.
Sudharshan the warrior was a Brahmin of Ujjaini. He prayed to the Fire God 'AGNI' and secured from him a flaming sword. Once when he had to go through a test to prove his leadership over the Brahmins he was involved in a series of incidents and came out suc. cessful to become the king of Ujjaini. The story reproduced here keeps the adolescent readers in view.
