KADARMA AND DEVAHUTI

When Brahma created the universe, he wanted human beings to be born as Deva Purushas. While he was meditating thus, his form divided itself. The right half became man and the left half woman-Swayambhuva Manu and Satarupa,-the father and mother respectively of the beautiful princes Deva- huti; and of all mankind. Kardama Rishi, who was born of the heart of Brahma, propitiated Vishnu for the purpose of getting a virtuous and charming wife. Vishnu granted the desire of his devotee and also condescended to be born as his son. Soon after, Swayambhuva Manu and Satarupa visited Kardama's hermitage and requested him to him to accept their daughter as his wife. Kardama married Devahuti on the condition that he would renounce the world after a son was born to them.
In the course of time, Devahuti gave birth to nine daughters who were married to nine eminent sages. But when Kapila was born, Kardama remembered the promise he had made to Brahma, his father and left for the forest. Kapila, from his very birth, was a free soul. He became the founder of the School of Sankhya philosophy; and as a natural teacher of mankind, he instructed his mother Devahuti into the path of attaining the highest bliss.
