Synopsis
Godaan is considered to be the most outstanding work of Premchand. Even though the novel was written before independence, it has stood the test of time on account of the deep rooted ethos and the depth of its characters. In this novel, Premchand has portrayed the social and political scenario of an Indian village during British rule. It reflects the hard struggle for survival undertaken by the Indian peasants. Besides portraying the predicament of rural life, Godaan also gives a glimpse of the emerging modern India. Hori is an ordinary farmer who is committed towards his work. He has a strong desire to rear a cow. He eventually manages to get a cow but his happiness is shortlived. The cow dies but Hori is supposed to pay its price. Hori takes a loan to meet his expenses, and before he realises it, he is caught in the trap of ever-increasing debt. On one side, the novel depicts the life of a common man like Hori, whereas, on the other, it makes us witness the pompous life led by the village headman Rai Saheb. It also shows us the contrast between village and city life. What happens to Hori? Will he be able to fulfill his dream of having a cow? Read on to find out.

About The Author
Premchand was born in Lamhi, a village near Varanasi, on 31st July 1880. His parents named him Dhanpat Rai. He passed his high school exam in 1899 and started his career as a teacher with a monthly salary of eighteen rupees. He continued his education along with his work. By 1919, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Prayag University. In 1920, he was inspired by a speech of Mahatma Gandhi and resigned from his government job. He started working as an editor for newspapers- Maryada and Madhuri. Premchand's formal education started in Urdu. In Urdu, he used to write under the pen name 'Nawab Rai'. Premchand is known for depicting 'realism' and his creations are relevant even in the present day society. Premchand is well known in Hindi literature for his novels and has bagged the title of 'Upanyas Samrat'. He wrote around three hundred short stories, twelve novels, and two plays. His well-known novels are Godaan, Nirmala, Rangbhoomi, Gaban and Mangalsutra. His language is simple and heart touching, which connects with the common man. Premchand struggled with poverty all his life and passed away on 8th October 1936.
