THE FALSE HERMIT
AND OTHER STORIES
In days gone by, when literacy was the privilege of the fortunate few, people would gather around the village bard or the visiting minstrel in the evening, to listen to their stories by the glow of the firelight. Very often, the stories carried a suitable moral content, and this invariably set the pattern for social behaviour. To that extent, the bards carried the responsibility of educating and shaping the moral character of the people. Adarsh Chitra Katha bring to you three stories from that treasure-house of tales- the Katha Sarit Sagara. In their turn, they draw from us silent chuckles, admiration for grit and intelligence and sympathy for the foolish and the unfortunate.
