CHAULA DEVI

Chauladevi was a dancer at the temple of Somnath during the reign of Raja Bheem Dev of Gujarat. The valiant king of the Chalukyas was so fascinated by Chauladevi that he wanted to make her his queen. Up to the point of their meeting, there is accord amongst the various historians but with regard to their further rela- tionship authoritative documentary evidence is lacking. The romance between Chauladevi and Raja Bheem Dev brought the King into direct con- frontation with his zealous minister, Vimal Shah. Gujarat was surrounded by enemy states and internal feuds, too, threatened Bheem Dev's sovereignty. Raja Bheem Dev's involvement with a temple dancer and the consequent neglect of his state duties irked the nobility. In our retelling of this historical legend we highlight the self-sacrifice of a woman whose reason controlled the dictates of her heart.
