Mula Deva
Muladevi is a story from the Kathasaritsagara an eleventh century sanskrit classic. by the poet Somadeva. During a visit to Patliputra, Muladeva, an acknowledged wit of Ujjaini, encounters a young woman who makes him appear, by comparison, quite a fool. He decides to marry her only to teach a lesson. By a clever ruse, the battered young woman sets out to prove her superior mental prowess. This story takes the reader into the Golden age of Indian Wit, when scholars vied with each other for intellectual and often tricky victories. It proves an infinitely variegated source of humour, sympathy, understanding and knowledge. The tangles and knots of this intricate story indicate how highly knowledge and humour were prized in ancient times ?
