Mastani
Bajirao I, the renowned Maratha Peshwa, came to the aid of Raja Chhatrasal of Bundhelkhand when Mohammed Shah Bangesh invaded his undefended territory. After his victory, Bajirao stayed on to enjoy a brief respite from his tumultuous seiges and was enchanted with the innocent charms of Mastani, Raja Chhatrasal's adopted daughter. Mastani, on her part, was captivated by the young Peshwa. Following the dictates of love, Mastani ac- companied Bajirao to his headquarters at Poona. This incurred the disapproval of the Peshwa family as well as the powerful priesthood. Undeterred by the mounting opposition, the bond between the fighting Peshwa and the delicate flower of Bundhelkhand strengthened. Ultimately, the pressures engendered by palace intrigues took their toll and Bajirao's turbulent relationship with Mastani culminated in a manner that shook the whole dynasty.
