Rupinika
Rupinika is yet another fascinating story from the Kathasaritsagara, Somadeva's eleventh century Sanskrit classic. The story centres round Rupinika, a temple dancer who dares to fall in love with a poor brahmin youth. As a result, she also falls from grace. This situation is aggravated by her mother, an avaricious old crone, who cunningly strives to keep Rupinika and her lover apart. The plot thickens as the lovers outwit the scheming old courtesan; and the ludicrous and the improbable interweave to give this story an enchanting serio-comic dimension.
