Roopmati
Roopmati was the daughter of a Rathore Rajput, Thakur Thansingh of Dharampuri, in Malawa. She excelled in playing the been and in comprising virtues. Praises of her beauty and virtues were sung all over Malawa. Her love for Sultan Wazid Khan, the ruler of Mandu, known as Baz Bahadur, is a saga of faithfulness and true love. Her final sacrifice at the altar of love not only immortalised her but carved a niche for Malwa in the annals of history.
There are conflicting views as to Roopmati's origins, some historians do not accept her as a Rajput princess, even the episode of her love for Baz Bahadur is disputed. In the Akbarnama, Roopmati has a palace of honour as Baz Bahadur's wife. but the historians Farishta describes her as a courtsean. Avoiding historical wrangles we project here the story of Roopmati and Baz Bahadur purely as a romantic tale, one that is dear not only to the people of Malawa but to every soul that thrills to a story of enduring passion.
