Ravindra Nath Tagore
DO YOU KNOW who wrote our national anthem, Jana-gana-mana ? It was written by Rabindranath Tagore, popularly known as Gurudev. Another Tagore song, Amar Sonar Bangla, is the national anthem of Bangladesh. Born in Calcutta in 1861, Rabindranath had his education mostly at home, and, for one year, at the University College, London. His father, Debendranath, was an eminent social and religious reformer. People called him Maharishi because of his saintly nature.
Brought up in a home where music and poetry were the very air he breathed, Rabindranath started writing poetry at an early age. He became not only a great poet but also a great writer of dramas, short stories, novels and essays. He sang, acted and painted too. He evolved a new style of music, known as "Rabindra Sangeet". In 1913, Tagore was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for his masterpiece, Gitanjali.
Tagore established a school at Shantiniketan. In course of time he developed it into Viswa-Bharati University which became a great centre of Indian culture. Tagore died in 1941.
