Lala Lajpat Rai

Lala Lajpat Rai was an institution. From his early youth he entered every public movement which aimed at liberating India from foreign rule. Before Gandhiji appeared on the scene, he kindled the fire of service, suffering and sacrifice in the hearts of millions of his countrymen. As an educationist and social reformer, his contribution to the growth of nationalism was invaluable. As an orator, he had no peer. He always acted fearlessly and, when provoked, roared like a lion. No wonder he came to be known as Sher-e-Punjab. Lala Lajpat Rai did not like the moderate method of agitation. He tol Congressmen that any appeal to Britain for reforms would take them no- where. He asked them to show manliness and not to behave like beggars Along with Balgangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal, he formed the nationa trio known as "Lal-Bal-Pal". The three resolutely took up the challenge of the times, undeterred by the heavy odds, i.e. the might of the British Empire over which, it was claimed, the sun never set. Lalaji, in particular, blazed a trail which will ever shed the beacon light to show the way of sacrifice to posterity. He used all his energy and talent in the service of the motherland and her poor masses. He lived gloriously and died gloriously. To be martyred in the forefront of the battleline was for him the very summit of ambition. His end secured him the crown he rightly deserved.
