Jawahar Lal Nehru
NOVEMBER 14, 1889 is a memorable day in our history as the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, one of India's most distinguished sons and a prince among freedom fighters. The day is celebrated in India as Children's Day. Jawaharlal was born in Allahabad. His father, Motilal Nehru, was a famous and wealthy lawyer. Jawharlal was educated in England. He became a barrister and began to practise in Allahabad as his father's junior. Both father and son gave up their practice and princely life to participate in India's struggle for freedom under Gandhiji's leadership. Jawaharlal spent many a long, lonely year in prison. He became the first Prime Minister of free India. He regarded himself as the first servant of the people. He worked hard to make India a great country again. He worked till the last. Nehru began the planned development of India. He tried to foster a "scientific temper" in the country. He believed that only by participating fully in the march of science and tech- nology could India develop herself. He laid great emphasis on secularism. socialism and democracy for the achievement of national objectives. Nehru devoted all his thought and energy to the cause of friendship and peace among nations. He gave great moral support to freedom movements in Africa and Asia. Nehru loved children dearly, and they loved him dearly in turn and called him Chacha Nehru. The story of Jawaharlal's life is one of a great life, nobly lived.
