Surya Sen
THIS is the story of Surjya Sen who occupies a pre-eminent place in India's galaxy of freedom fighters. He was a teacher in a school at Chittagong, now in Bangladesh, and was popularly called "Masterda." Masterda was the founder of a revolutionary group named the Indian Republican Army, Chittagong branch. He led the IRA revolt in Chittagong on April 18, 1930, and put up a glorious fight against the British forces on Jalalabad Hill, on the outskirts of Chittagong. Between May 1930 and February 1933, the absconding Masterda master-minded daring revolutionary actions against the semi-military and oppressive British regime in Chittagong. These revolutionary actions shook the foundations of British rule in Bengal. Masterda frustrated many a British attempt to capture him. He became a legend and popular hero. In February 1933, he was captured as a result of treachery and subjected to brutal tortures. Masterda was hanged on January 12, 1934. Among the Chittagong revolutionaries, Kalpana Dutt, who was sentenced to transportation for life, is still with us as Kalpana Joshi, wife of the late Shri P.C Joshi an eminent communist leader.
