Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose

"The elements were so mixed in him that Nature might stand up, And say to all the world, This was a man'
ON January 23, 1897, Mother India was blessed with a son, destined to quicken her march towards freedom. That distinguished son was Subhas Chandra Bose, affectionately called Netaji. Subhas's life-story reads like a drama full of thrill and romance. While still in his teens, he quietly left his home in search of a guru at holy places. The search proved futile and he came back disappointed. Inspired by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Aurobindo, Subhas was able to chart the course of his life: he would be a yogi in action. After graduating in 1919, Subhas went to England and passed the ICS examination, standing fourth in order of merit. He resigned from the Civil Service while on probation, and returned to India to begin his stormy political career His undaunted courage and dynamic personality soon made him the idol of the youth. The British Government began to consider him a dangerous political leader. Within a span of 20 years-from 1921 to 1940- he was imprisoned about a dozen times. Subhas was elected Congress President in 1938 and again in 1939. With war threatening in Europe and Britain worried about its own survival, he felt the time had come to give Britain an ultimatum to quit India. Following political differences with Gandhiji, he resigned from the Congress Presidentship and formed the Forward Bloc. Subhas exhorted his country- en to get ready for the struggle ahead. He was arrested in July, 1940, But was soon released. on grounds of ill-health. In January, 1941, Subhas slipped out of his Calcutta residence which was heavily guarded by the police. He left for Peshawar by train and from there on to Kabul by road, posing as Ziauddin, a deaf and dumb Pathan. Subhas's thrilling escape from Calcutta, the hardships and risks he under- went during his journey from Calcutta to Kabul, the suspense, privations and waiting there before he was helped by the Italian Embassy to go to Berlin, his 90-day submarine voyage to reach East Asia, his founding of the INA, and the march of the INA towards the homeland with battle cries of "Chalo Delhi" and "Jai Hind"-these add up to a colourful and gripping drama.
